Leanne Carrasco, decided to commemorate her coming graduation by organizing a pizza party at a homeless shelter in Houston, Texas.
The senior high school student, ordered 95 boxes of pizza, and with the help of her friends, filled up goody bags for the celebratory crowd — about 200 homeless women and children.
In the past, Carrasco had volunteered with her family at the Star of Hope Family Development Center. This time around, she enlisted with a bunch of her friends to work with the foundation.
The event took a whole month to prepare, during which the graduating students packed toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and wipes, into 400 hygiene bags to give the residents of the shelter.
A spokesman for Star of Hope, Scott Arthur, said, “They (high school volunteers) had respect for these people. They saw them as peers. The residents saw this as a validation that people do care.
“It gives you hope for the youth of today. They (the teens) were able to think of other people,” Arthur adds.
Meanwhile, Carrasco told CNN, “Not a lot of people have the same options as me. It’s not fair. There are a lot of people who need help. So I give it.”
She continues, “I think you should always know you’re lucky to have what you have. Don’t take that for granted and continue to give.”
