Must Try: Spicy Mocha-ccino

With record-breaking cold temperatures as of late, it’s only normal to reach for that hot cup of coffee to keep warm. But what if you can take the heat up a notch?

Enter the Spicy Mocha-ccino, one of Coffee Beanery master barista Zaldy Mangaliag’s coffee drinks during a workshop at the CCA Manila for Telus International Philippines. It is his winning flavored coffee beverage from the 2010 Philippine Grand Barista Cup

Naisip ko ‘to kasi malamig ang panahon at the time, so I thought of incorporating siling labuyo for that Pinoy kick and taste,” he says. His signature drink combines the sweet and spicy flavor that Filipinos love so much, as well as the bitterness of coffee.

Yields: 2 cups


  • 10 g. butter
  • 40 g. chocolate powder
  • 30 mL cream
  • A slice of orange
  • 2 siling labuyo
  • Caramel sauce
  • Ground coffee
  • Milk


  1. Heat up the pan and melt butter.
  2. Add the chocolate powder and stir.
  3. Pour the cream.
  4. Squeeze in a slice of orange to balance the taste.
  5. Add siling labuyo.
  6. Add caramel sauce according to your preference.
  7. Cook until the sauce blobs.
  8. Pour into two separate mugs and set aside.
  9. Extract an appropriate amount of espresso from ground coffee beans.
  10. Pour into the mugs.
  11. Steam the milk until warm and foamy.
  12. Add to the mixture of spicy chocolate sauce and espresso.
