Shortly after superhero-film Aquaman’s Philippine premiere, we at MBites were treated to an exclusive set of drinks drawing inspiration from the King of the Sea.
We marched over to DC Super Heroes Cafe in SM Megamall, and tried three new drinks from the sleek comic-book lovers’ haven. There was King of Atlantis, a blend of peaches, mangoes, ginger, and herbs; Mera con Hielo, a zany take on the Filipino dessert staple; and the Deep Sea Hunter, a mixture of blueberries, grapes and pineapples.
But before we toasted with these concoctions, we got to wolf down good chow. The meals were also modeled after the Aquaman tale; the three offerings were Crab Roll, made with sauteed crab meat and fresh onion; buttermilk-fried chicken wings; and Belly Buster, a ⅓ lb. Angus patty served with grilled cheese.
Back to the drinks.
King of Atlantis is a fine, zesty beverage. The mango and peach tastes blend well in the mouth. It’s a safe bet for nice RNR with a comic book in hand.
Deep Sea Hunter, like King of Atlantis, is also fruity. The myriad of flavors take the palate on a twirl.
And lastly, the Mera con Hielo. Oh, Mera you ravishing little thing, you. This beverage is a peculiar rendition of a local sweet staple. It teems with pandan notes, but retains the fresh corn, frosted cereal, and is capped off with a delicious malt powder taste. Easily the best drink among the three.
