Last month, the inflation rate in our country reached a whopping 6.4 percent. Syempre kaakibat nun ang pagmahal ng bilihin, bro. Filipino bird’s eye chili AKA siling labuyo in particular became a hot topic with its price supposedly surging to an outrageous P1,000 per kilo in some markets. Because of this, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol challenged consumers to plant the small chili peppers in their backyards.
Rounded up (by a lot!), labuyo, at that time, was actually sold at around P600 to 800 per kilo.
Right now, it costs about P400-600 per kilo, costly pa rin, brad. While faced with this issue, us Filipinos would find ways to make light of the situation. Just like that, sumabog ang internet with sili memes. Here’s a couple which we found priceless… or more accurately, pricey:
How much do you have in your wallet?
Hindi lang kotse ang batayan ng yaman.
Mainit kaya sa balat ‘to?

The price gap is real, man.
Extra spicy o extra pricey?
